What You Focus on – Seems Real

How many times have you played out a bad scene in your mind, a tragedy complete with the scariest details? You start to feel fearful, anxious and stressed out all at the same time…..only to be reminded that it didn’t happen…
I know for me – I play out the worst case scenario so that anything that does happen will feel better than the worst case I’ve imagined. It’s a silly stupid game that really does me no good because during that process I am loaded with fear and anxiety….over something that hasn’t even happened!  Have you done this???
Our crazy minds.
Scientists have found that we have between 60,000 – 80,000 thoughts a day….and a whopping 80% are NEGATIVE….and 95% are not even true!
So why do we do it?  Why do we put ourselves through that self sabatoge? Because we have conditioned our brains to think this way. Becoming a habitual pessimist is something you trained your brain to do, whether you’re just like me and think the worst so anything that happens will feel a bit better or somewhere in your past you’ve been told something negative and you’ve adopted that mindset as your truth.  Having this go-to behavior pattern is like driving down a very familiar road, you know it and you can speed down it quickly, without even thinking about how to steer the wheel.
Here’s the great news:  YOU GET TO RE-WRITE YOUR STORY.  It takes just as much energy to create a negative story as it does a positive story. But creating a positive story opens your mental energy to a new way of thinking which alters the way you feel and act.  And just like the road analogy, turning your mind to a new story would be similar to taking a new route down a dirt path, it may feel unfamiliar at first but the more you drive it the more it becomes paved into a concrete street.
This week, the minute you notice your monkey mind going into a story that makes you feel anxious, stressed or full of negativity,  RE-WRITE THE STORY.  Remember you are the driver of the bus, not the passenger. You get to decide in that moment what street you want to go down.
